Graeme Murty is cooking up a storm in his testimonial year!

The Reading skipper took on team-mates Brynjar Gunnarsson and Marcus Hahnemann in a kitchen challenge at top brasserie lsq2 in the town.

The big night, called The R Word, was a spoof on celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay's programme The F Word.

Reading WAGS waited on guests, and players Shane Long, Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt served drinks at the bar.

An auction on the night helped raise a total of around £6,000 and guests paid for the dishes they felt most worthy.

Midfielder Gunnarsson raised £673.20 for his starter of drunken prawns, while goalkeeper Hahnemann received £499.51 with his dessert of American pies.

But former Scotland international Murty came out on top in the cook off as guests donated £1,447.75 after giving the thumbs up to his dish of Aberdeen Angus char-grilled beef.

Murty was in a good position to record a victory after he was given a cooking lesson by top chef Antony Worrall-Thompson in February.

The Graeme Murty Testimonial Fund is donating large sums to Newbury-based charity Swings and Smiles, which helps children with special needs.

Murty said: "We are going to put a purpose-built facility together for special needs and able-bodied children to play together because there is nothing like it in the Thames Valley area."
