Cardiff City are chasing their own version of the American dream in a link-up with baseball's New York Mets.

Bluebirds' chairman Peter Ridsdale was in the Big Apple last week getting tips from Mets bosses on how to maximise the match-day earning potential of Cardiff's new 27,000-capacity stadium.

Ridsdale toured the Mets' new state-of-the-art stadium Citi Field, which opened earlier this year following the demolition of Shea Stadium, their home since the mid-1960s.

Ridsdale hopes the baseball giants' marketing experience will help to increase revenue at the Leckwith development, which will officially open with a game against Celtic on July 22.

It will be the home of the Coca-Cola Championship club, and Cardiff Blues RFC, from the start of next season.

Ridsdale told the South Wales Echo: "We have a lot to learn from them about how they package the whole sporting concept.

"We have a major asset in the stadium now. It's not in the planning stages, it's not all pie in the sky. The stadium has been delivered and that puts the club in a great position to form a bigger income stream than we had at Ninian Park."
