CLOSING THE GAP

After back-to-back defeats at the hands of Swansea City and Coventry City, Peterborough United recorded their first win since beating Ipswich Town in mid-February.

Craig Mackail-Smith bagged the only goal of the game five minutes before half-time as the Posh saw off Sheffield United 1-0.

It was their sixth win of the season, all at London Road, and closed the gap at the foot of the table to just three points following Plymouth Argyle's 2-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers.

Goals either side of half-time from Adel Taarabt - from the spot - and Damion Stewart gave the R's their third win in four matches following five straight defeats before that.

TAKING ADVANTAGE

West Bromwich Albion took advantage of their game in hand to climb above Nottingham Forest into second spot.

Robert Koren fired the Baggies back into an automatic spot with a goal 11 minutes from time to see off Sheffield Wednesday.

Swansea City also only needed one goal to see off hosts Watford. Shefki Kuqi netted the only goal of the game after 18 minutes as the Swans moved to within five points of the now third placed Forest.

BREATHING SPACE

Ipswich and Bristol City were able to put a bit of space between themselves and the relegation zone with wins on Tuesday night.

Daryl Murphy scored a brace with a goal in each half as the Tractor Boys beat sixth placed Cardiff City 2-0.

At Selhurst Park Crystal Palace slipped to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bristol City courtesy of Chris Iwelumo's 73rd minute goal.
