Preston North End have appointed Phil Brown as their new Manager.

The former Hull City boss replaces Darren Ferguson, who was sacked by the npower Championship club last week.

Brown joins Preston with the club bottom of the table and seven points from safety.

His first match in charge will be Saturday's FA Cup clash with Nottingham Forest, where he will go head to head with former Lilywhites boss Billy Davies.

The 51-year-old began his managerial career with Derby County in 2005 but was in charge for just seven months.

He joined Hull City as First Team coach under Phil Parkinson and later replaced the former Charlton Athletic boss at the helm.

He helped the Tigers avoid relegation before guiding them to the Play-Offs at the end of his first full season. A 1-0 win over Bristol City in the Play-Off Final at Wembley ensured their promotion to the Premier League.
