Preston North End will be playing in npower League 1 next season after they were relegated from the Championship, following their 1-0 home defeat to Cardiff City.

PNE have put up a fight in recent weeks and four wins and two draws from seven games gave them hope but Saturday's 4-0 at Millwall seriously dented their chances.

The Lilywhites are the longest serving team in the Championship but their relegation ends an 11-year stay in the second tier of English football.

Since their promotion PNE have reached the Championship Play-Offs four times, reaching the final twice in 2001 and 2005.

This season the Club has won just nine matches, with four of them coming under Phil Brown, who only replaced Darren Ferguson on January 6th.
