Paul Hayes has had his contract at Preston terminated by mutual consent.
The striker is now free to join another club having been linked with a summer move to League One Charlton.
Hayes joined Preston last summer on a free transfer from Scunthorpe, where he had won the Iron's player of the year award.
However, the 28-year-old found his first-team opportunities limited and was loaned out to Barnsley in November.
He scored four goals in 26 appearances for the Lilywhites.
The club have also handed young centre-half Daniel Devine a one-year professional contract after he broke into the first team at the back end of last season.
