Nottingham Forest have announced the sad death of owner and former chairman Nigel Doughty.

The 54-year-old was found dead earlier today at his home in Lincolnshire.

Having acquired the club in 1999, the lifelong Forest fan stood down as chairman in October last year, following the dismissal of Steve McClaren.

Football League Chairman Greg Clarke said: "I'm hugely saddened to hear of Nigel's death.

"He has made an enormous contribution to Nottingham Forest and The Football League and will be greatly missed by us all."

Everyone connected with The Football League would like to express its deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

A statement on said: "The club would like to appeal for the privacy of Mr Doughty's family to be observed at this sad time. 

"The club will be making no further comment."
