Portsmouth have been relegated from the npower Championship after losing 2-1 to Derby County at Fratton Park.

Only a victory would have been enough for Michael Appleton's men to stave off relegation. Luke Varney cancelled out the Rams half-time lead in the 74th minute to give them hope of a comeback but only four minutes after equalising they were behind again when Steve Davies scored what turned out to be the winning goal.

Pompey's season has been marred with off-field issues and they have ultimately cost the south coast club their Championship status. They were flung into a relegation scrap after a 10-point deduction and have failed to beat the drop.

The club, who won the FA Cup in 2008, were only relegated from the Premier League in 2010 after seven consecutive top flight seasons but will now play in the third tier of English football.
