Gaby Zakuani has been named as the club captain at Peterborough for next season.

Zakuani will take over the armband from transfer-listed midfielder Grant McCann.

Boss Darren Ferguson believes imposing centre-half Zakuani, who has became a massive fans' favourite during almost four years at London Road, is a perfect fit for the role.

"In a captain I look for leadership and someone I can trust and Gaby fits that bill," Ferguson told the club's official website. "He has the respect from all of the players and he was a great example to all of the lads last season with his commitment to the cause."

Zakuani, 26, added: "When the manager told me he wanted me to lead the club forward it was a very happy and proud moment for me.

"The captaincy is something I will take in my stride. I am very happy in the city and everyone knows my passion for the club. They are big shoes to jump into because Grant McCann did a fantastic job but I am looking forward to that challenge."
