Hull manager Steve Bruce admitted his side did not look ready for Saturday's opening npower Championship game against Bolton when edging past Rotherham at the weekend in the Capital One Cup.
The Tigers scraped through 7-6 on penalties after their first-round clash ended in a 1-1 draw and Bruce is looking for a marked improvement.
"What I learned from Saturday is that there's still a lot of work to be done," Bruce told the club's official website.
"We can't go into a game like on Saturday and miss seven or eight chances, but overall we got through and we're in the next round of the cup.
"The big disappointment in pre-season has been that too many players have picked up niggly injuries and missed two or three weeks. At this stage, it's catch-up time but we'll be ok."
