Charlton boss Chris Powell received a welcome boost over the weekend as his side warmed up for Friday's derby against Crystal Palace by beating Chelsea in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Goals from Danny Green, new signing Ricardo Fuller and Michael Smith secured a 3-2 victory over the Blues, while midfielder Dale Stephens made his first Addicks appearance since a deadline-day move to Aston Villa fell through.

"Chelsea had a number of young players on show, as well as a few with first-team experience, but I can't fault my side's efforts," Powell told the club website.

"It was also good to see Dale Stephens back in a red shirt. After all the speculation last week, he showed what a good professional he is and supplied some telling passes.

"Greeny took his goal well, Dorian Dervite's distribution from the back was excellent and Ricardo showed us again what he can do.

"The whole team did well, and it was a good way to finish a hard-working week. Now we will get ready and prepared for the big derby against Crystal Palace."
