Barnsley manager Keith Hill has confirmed he plans to offer midfielder John Rooney a permanent contract, subject to international clearance.

Rooney, 21, brother of Manchester United striker Wayne, has impressed Hill during a month-long trial at Oakwell.

"John Rooney is going to sign with us until the end of the season," Hill told the Barnsley Chronicle.

"He's worth taking a punt on and we can develop him. I'm not sure how long it will take for the international clearance to come through."

Rooney's previous club was American side Orlando City and the relevant paperwork is not expected to be finalised in time for the weekend's game at Charlton.
