Bolton goalkeeper Andy Lonergan is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after undergoing cartilage surgery.
Lonergan has failed to dislodge Trotters number one Adam Bogdan since joining from Leeds this summer.
And any ambitions to do so will be placed on the backburner following a training ground accident last week.
Caretaker boss Jimmy Phillips said: "Andy Lonergan unfortunately before the Bristol City game, in a very innocuous training incident, had a cartilage problem.
"He had that operated on in London so he's going to be out for, I think five or six weeks."
