Sheffield Wednesday striker Chris Maguire was ready to rejoin Portsmouth on a month's loan before he suffered a knee injury, according to Pompey boss Michael Appleton.

Appleton insists the Scot, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Fratton Park, was set to link up with his side again ahead of Monday night's npower League One clash with Sheffield United but damaged his medial knee ligaments in training the day before.

"We had everything lined up with Sheffield Wednesday," he told the Sheffield Star. "They were more than happy for him to come.

"He was training there Sunday morning and was due to meet us at the hotel on Sunday night.

"Then he turned quite sharply in one of the sessions and has done his medial ligament.

"I am not sure how bad it is but when I spoke to him on the phone yesterday afternoon after a scan, they think it is going to be around the six-week mark."
