Wigan Athletic have been relegated to The Football League after a 4-1 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Latics were four points adrift of Sunderland, and safety, coming into the match with the Gunners and, therefore, needed at least a point in the capital to keep their slim survival hopes alive going into the final weekend of the Premier League season.

They weren't able to do that, however, with Lukas Podolski bagging a brace and Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey also scoring for Arsene Wenger's men in their convincing victory - a result that leaves the Latics unable to move out of the bottom three on the last day of the campaign when they host Aston Villa.

It's been a week of contrasting fortunes for the DW Stadium outfit, with Roberto Martinez and his men lifting the FA Cup on Saturday - the first major trophy in the club's history - after seeing off Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley. They will now return to the Championship for the first time since they were promoted from the division as runners-up in 2005.

The Latics will join already-relegated Queens Park Rangers and Reading in The Football League.
