Wigan Athletic have signed Cardiff City striker Nicky Maynard on loan for the rest of the season..

The 27-year-old had been due for a medical this week after watching Latics' win over Bournemouth at the weekend and on Thursday the Sky Bet Championship club confirmed he would be a part of their promotion push.

Maynard, a prolific goalscorer in English football's second tier having spent time with the likes of West Ham, Bristol City and the Bluebirds, has played just 10 games this season, scoring once.

"Nicky is at the stage of his career where he wants to play regular football again after his injury last season," boss Uwe Rosler said.

"He wants to prove a point to himself and also to the people.

"That's a perfect scenario for us; it matches our ambitions. We want to prove a point, we want to go up, we want to go into the play-offs and I think we can give him the platform to perform again.

"I will be patient with him because he has not played in a while. But, he's fit, and he's ready to go."

Wigan have been keen to add more attacking options for Rosler this week after summer signing Grant Holt was surprisingly sent to Aston Villa on another loan move.
