Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Jose Semedo is expected to be ruled out long-term after fracturing his fibula and sustaining ligament damage.

The 29-year-old Portuguese was forced out of Tuesday night's home defeat to Wigan in the 64th minute after falling awkwardly in a challenge and X-rays have confirmed the club's worst fears.

"Semi has fractured his fibula and also has ligament damage," Wednesday's head physiotherapist Paul Smith told the club's official website.

"He will see the surgeon in London on Friday and we expect him to be out for six to eight weeks."

Semedo, who started his career at Sporting Lisbon, joined the club on a free transfer from Charlton in July 2011 and has made over 100 appearances.

He has been a regular starter under manager Stuart Gray and has featured in all but a handful of games this season.
