Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka has been dealt a fresh injury blow by the news that goalkeeper Tomas Mejias could be out of action for up to five weeks.

The Spaniard, who made his Boro debut in a 1-0 Sky Bet Championship defeat at Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, injured a hand in training and is likely to be sidelined for up to a month.

Mejias' misfortune came just days after Shay Given, who had performed so admirably on loan, returned to parent club Aston Villa.

Karanka now faces a choice between the fit-again Jason Steele, Jayson Leutwiler and Dimi Konstantopoulos for the starting berth.

He told the club's official website: "It's unbelievable - each day I have one keeper less to choose from, and it makes the decisions easier.

"I trust in Jason Steele, Jayson Leutwiler and Dimi, and we have to work with these three now."
