Reading striker Jason Roberts has announced his retirement due to injury.

The 36-year-old confirmed the decision on Twitter having not managed a single appearance for the Royals this season due to a persistent hip problem.

He wrote: " It is with great sadness that I announce my retirement from professional football on medical advice...Thank You Football for Everything...

"It has been an honour representing the Clubs I have played for..and the Fans that have always supported me."

Roberts began his career at Wolves and also played for Bristol Rovers, West Brom, Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers.

He scored 137 league goals in 449 games and his last appearance came in December 2012, in Reading's 1-0 Premier League defeat against Southampton.
