Bolton Wanderers central midfielder Josh Vela has joined Sky Bet League 1 strugglers Notts County on a one-month loan deal.

The 20-year-old has played just twice for Wanderers this season and has not appeared at all in the Sky Bet Championship, although several injuries have stunted his progress.

Now Wanderers boss Dougie Freedman thinks a move away from the Reebok Stadium can aid his development.

"It's a football decision - if I was to be selfish I'd keep him by my side," the Scot said.

"We've had a difficult time with Josh in terms of him filling his potential. He's turned his professionalism around and now he understands what training's about.

"He's been fantastic last three or four months, he's worked his way to being around the bench. He's not quite cracked the first team yet, he's got two very difficult characters in front of him in Jay (Spearing) and Medo (Kamara) who've been playing very well.

"I believe it's the best decision to let him go on loan for a month and let him get some football."
