The School's History Project, is a fully resourced scheme of work for primary schools based on the history of individual football clubs. Crucially it is also referenced to the National Curriculum, and draws on the considerable experience of several primary school teachers.
The key difference between this scheme and existing ideas about sport and classroom teaching is the club-specific approach so that, for the first time, the club is a legitimate focus within the academic curriculum. Teachers across a club's fan base area can enthuse children in their learning whilst simultaneously promoting interest in the club's history and heritage.
Sports Inspire Educational Publishing have produced club specific CDs, containing all necessary resources. Representatives of the club, usually including a historian and a graphic designer, work with the company for an initial period of at least two days in order to provide the necessary information and ensure that the design of the document is as required.
The project has been well received and taught widely in local schools. Crucially the resources produced can stand alone, and require no ongoing support from the community scheme or club. They are also designed to be able to be taught by any trained teacher, including those who have little or no interest in football. Therefore, once established, the scheme has the potential for year-on-year benefits. Over time, it can be taught to thousands of children, with a legacy in terms of interest, support and associated spin-offs repaying any initial investment many times over.
