In his hit song 7 Days Craig David never mentions taking the girl to The Dell on a Saturday.

But he grew up in Southampton, and is a Saints' fan to the core.

David's mum worked in Superdrug. His father was a carpenter, who played bass guitar in a local reggae group.

And it may well be the musical influence of his dad that kick-started David's early musical career that has led to 13 chart hits.

David the football fan grew up relishing the idea of Southampton mixing it with the big boys in the top flight.

Aside from his musical heroes, there is little doubt about who the name of his footballing idol…

David, 27, said: "I'd have to say Matthew Le Tissier was the best player I saw.

"He has scored some of the most amazing goals - and his skills were second to none.

"I remember a season or two early into the start of the Premier League.

"Southampton beat Newcastle 4-2 and Le Tiss scored one of my favourite goals at the Dell.

"He received the ball outside the area, chipped it over the defender's head, then chipped it over the next defender's head, then coolly placed it past the keeper.

"It was just complete composure throughout.

"As a teenager it was a brilliant time growing up with such great players at Southampton and seeing how intimidated other clubs were when they came down to The Dell...I loved it."

In recent years, though, things have been been less happy at the Coca-Cola Championship club.

Last season Saints flirted dangerously close with relegation - and are again in a relegation dog fight.

But under the guidance of manager Jan Poortvliet, David is confident Southampton will not be relegated if they show the sort of spirit that saw them snatch a last-minute winner in the 3-2 victory at Preston North End.

He added: "If we're able to work as a team and fight to the death like we did against Preston we'll finish in a healthy position in the Championship.

"Just take a note out of Harry Redknapp's book. It is spirit and belief that can make the difference. The talent is already there."
