Millwall, or Millwall Rovers as they were previously known were founded way back in 1885 by workers at Morton's Jam Factory, on the Isle of Dogs.
The club's colours of blue and white came from the fact that most of the workers had come down from Scotland, so they took the colours of the Saltire.
Rovers' played their first match in 1885 against Fillebrook of Leytonstone, but they went down 5-0. It turned out to be one of few defeats season as they went unbeaten in their next 12 matches and only suffered three defeats all season.
A year later and the East End Football Association was formed, which meant the introduction of a Senior Cup competition, of which Millwall reached the first final. They played London Caledonians and the game finished 2-2 and rather than a replay the two teams shared the trophy, with each having it for six months.
The club was originally known as the Dockers, due to the job of most of the fans, who obviously worked on the docks. Because of this the club were the only ones, who until the 1960's, were allowed to kick off their matches at 3.15pm instead of the regulatory 3pm, to allow the dockers time to finish their morning shift and get to the game.
It is believed their nickname of the Lions came about after a piece was written about their excellent achievements, of reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1900, while they were still a Southern League side. Back then the semi-finals were played over two-legs and Rovers' drew 0-0 before losing 3-0 to Southampton.
They also reached the semi-finals of the competition in 1903 but they were beaten 3-0 on the day by Derby County at Villa Park, but it was still a fantastic achievement.
Following their giantkilling exploits they adopted a lion onto their badge and took on the motto We Fear No Foe Where E'er We Go. They didn't add the lion to their shirts though until 1936.
The club played at four different grounds on the Isle of Dogs before moving to their new ground The Den, which cost £10,000, in 2010. They played their first match there on October 22nd against Brighton & Hove Albion - who were then the reigning Southern League champions and they lost the game 1-0.
Millwall joined the Football League in 1920 as founder members of Division Three and their first match was against Bristol Rovers at the Den on August 28th which they went on to win 2-0.
The Den remained the Lions home until 1993, when they moved to the New Den, a 20,000 all-seater stadium.
