Outgoing Tranmere Rovers goalkeeper John Achterberg has been commended for his outstanding Community contribution during his time at the club.
The Dutch stopper joined from Eindhoven in 1998 and has become renowned for helping out with kids' coaching and study centres in the past ten seasons.
Tranmere's Community Scheme organiser Steve Williams explained that Achterberg always showed fantastic enthusiasm.
Williams said: "Whether it was working with young goalkeepers on Sunday mornings, helping out in the classroom, or attending functions and presentations, John was always keen to get involved.
"We wanted to thank John for all he'd done over the years as he is exactly the kind of player you want to have around."
A presentation was made to Achterberg during a question and answer session with youngsters at St Joseph's RC Primary school in Oxton.
He was joined by Rovers' Community Player of the Season Chris Greenacre.
Williams added: "John didn't know he was getting the award, so it was great to surprise him at the school.
"We gave the staff a bit of a warning, so they all knew it was coming. It was really nice for everyone involved."
Achterberg is leaving Rovers to join Liverpool as a goalkeeping coach. Williams says this shows the progress Tranmere are making.
He went on: "If our player/coaches are making the step up to clubs like Liverpool then we're obviously doing something right.
"It's a shame to lose John, but we wish him all the best for the future."
