Oldham recently held a World Cup themed 'Kickz' tournament where three different age groups youngsters had the opportunity to be crowned Oldham's World Cup Borough Champions.

Kickz is a programme which uses the power of football and appeal of professional football clubs brands in the aim to engage young people who may otherwise be difficult to reach.

The tournament consisted of three age groups U19s, U16s and U14s with teams being primarily selected from activities that are delivered across the borough by Oldham Athletic and Integrated Youth such as the Kickz, '3 v Free' and 'Youth Only Zone' initiatives.

These initiatives are all delivered during key evening days and times with an aim of providing positive diversionary activities for youngsters across Oldham. As part of the day all teams had been drawn as World Cup teams.

The winners from each age group were Slovakia in the U19s, Brazil in the U16s and Paraguay in the U14s, with Slovenia, Argentina and Ivory Coast all coming runners up in the respective age groups.

A great emphasis was put on fair play and this was evident with teams integrating well and getting on with each other both on and off the field. There was a reward in each age category for fair play and the winners were; Switzerland in the U19s, Denmark in the U16s and Ivory Coast in the U14s.

Oldham Athletic Community Trusts Kickz and Inclusion Co-ordinator James Mwale said: "Once again football has brought together different sections of the Oldham Community and proved how sport brings people together in a positive way.

"All the young people who took part can be proud of themselves by contributing to the day and showing great attitudes which made for a successful tournament. Initiatives that we delivered on a weekly basis with these youngsters do work and it's events like Sunday that confirm this."

The competition was delivered by Oldham Athletic Community Trust in partnership with Integrated Youth Services, Oldham Community Leisure, Oldham Community Health Services, Vision, Fearless - the young people's Crimestoppers campaign, Oldham Race Equality Partnership and The Oldham Academy North.
