FLT Futsal student Lauren Price has created history by becoming the first Welshwoman to win a Commonwealth Games boxing medal.

Lauren, who undertook her studies on The Football League Trust Education & Futsal programme at Cardiff City, outclassed Australian Kaye Scott in the middleweight quarter-final to guarantee at least a bronze and set up a semi-final with two-time world champion Ariane Fortine from Canada on Friday.

Cardiff City Foundation Operations Manager Simon Stephens said: "Lauren has been studying on the Education & Futsal programme for the past two years and has shown fantastic determination and dedication throughout. Therefore, it's no surprise to us that she's made history at the Commonwealth Games."

Lauren completed her BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma on the programme in May 2013 along with an NVQ Level 2 in Activity Leadership. Continuing at Cardiff City in September 2013 she commenced the Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development - a new Football League Trust course delivered in conjunction with University of South Wales.

Remarkably, Lauren has already enjoyed a successful football career, having played for Cardiff City FC Women's team, represented Wales and crowned inaugural Welsh Women's Premier League Player of the Season in 2013. However, Lauren decided to turn her talents to boxing for Wales in the Commonwealth Games, where women are competing for the first time.

Her futsal and football experience has come in particularly handy in the boxing ring. Lauren and her coach Colin Jones credit her time as a defender for the fast footwork that she uses to outmanoeuvre her opponents in the ring.

"Not many athletes find themselves with the dilemma of deciding whether to aim for a football World Cup or an Olympic Games," Stephens added.

"However, her attitude has already enabled her to juggle a successful international career and her BTEC studies. All of us on the Education & Futsal Programme wish Lauren the best of luck and will be rooting for her on Friday."

Mike Evans, General Manager of The Football League Trust, said: "Lauren is an absolute credit to Wales, Cardiff City and our education programmes. It's inspiring to see the calibre of students we have coming through our courses, and The Football League Trust will be right behind her on Friday."
