Following the publication of the timetable for the 2012 London Olympic Games, The Football League is today reminding fans that the start of the 2012/13 season will be delayed until 18 August as not clash with the event.

With the closing ceremony scheduled for August 12, Football League clubs voted in October 2009 to push the new season back to the middle of the month to allow fans to benefit fully from the first Games on British shores since 1948.

Speaking on the decision, The League's Head of Communications, John Nagle said at the time: "Football League clubs have voted overwhelmingly in favour of delaying the start of the 2012/13 season in order to support the London Olympics.

"This decision has been taken to ensure that police and transport links are not overstretched during such an important event for the county."
