TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE

A 90th minute goal from Leon McKenzie wasn't enough to stop Charlton Athletic bowing out of their second cup competition in the space of four days. Wayne Thomas' first for Southampton and one from Ricky Lambert were enough to ensure the Saints booked their place in the Area Semi-Finals with a 2-1 win at St Mary's.

SPOT ON

Three of Tuesday night's Johnstone Paint Trophy Area Quarter Finals went the distance and had to be decided by spot-kicks.

It ended 2-2 at the Coral Windows Stadium between Bradford City and Port Vale with the Bantams twice coming from behind to level the match with goals from Michael Flynn and James Hanson before a penalty shoot-out settled the outcome as the home team edged a thrilling 5-4 win to progress through to the next round.

Coca-Cola League 2 side Hereford United had goalkeeper Adam Bartlett to thank after he saved three spot-kicks in the 3-2 penalty shoot-out win against Leyton Orient after a late goal from Orient winger Jason Demetriou had cancelled out Leon Constantine's earlier strike for United.

Norwich City are into the next round of the competition after striker Jamie Cureton scored the winning penalty against Swindon Town at the County Ground after the match had ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.
