Gary Alexander restored parity on 64 minutes, scoring for the ninth time this season.
Brentford could have nicked the winner just before the end, when Myles Weston hit the woodwork but in the end both sides had to settle for the draw.
The two sides go head to head again, at St James' Park, in the second leg on Tuesday 8th February, with the sides' just 90 minutes away from Wembley.
