The winners of the Powerade Player of the Season awards, in the Coca-Cola Championship, Coca-Cola League 1 and Coca-Cola League 2, have been named. Teddy Sheringham of West Ham United, Curtis Davies of Luton Town and Lee Trundle of Swansea City came top in a special fans poll run in conjunction with Powerade and Goals on Sunday on Sky Sports.
Sheringham received 36% of the vote in the Coca-Cola Championship, with David Nugent finishing second with 34% and Steven Sidwell third with 16%.
His 20 goals helped West Ham secure a place in the Play-Offs and meant he finished the season as the Hammers leading scorer in the Championship - a staggering achievement given he is now in his 40th year. His four goals last month also saw him named Powerade Player of the Month for April.
Curtis Davies received 49% of the vote in Coca-Cola League 1, with Juan Ugarte (Wrexham) finishing second with 18% and Stuart Elliot (Hull) third with 15%.
Davies was instrumental in Luton's march to the Coca-Cola League 1 title this season. His impressive displays at the heart of their rearguard helped Mike Newell's side end the campaign with the best defensive record in the division. Davies also chipped in with a vital goal - the first of his senior career - in his side's 2-1 victory over Wrexham, a result which sealed the title for the Hatters.
Lee Trundle received 57% of the vote in Coca-Cola League 2, with Lee Steele (Leyton Orient) finishing second with 14% and Phil Jevons (Yeovil) third with 11%.
Trundle had an outstanding season for Swansea, scoring 22 goals to help earn his side automatic promotion to Coca-Cola League 1. The 29-year-old frontman has once again been a firm favourite with the Swans crowd this season not only for his goal scoring
exploits but also his distinctive showboating skills.
The Powerade Player of the Season shortlist comprised the nine Player of the Month winners in the Coca-Cola Championship, Coca-Cola League 1 and Coca-Cola League 2 respectively. Fans were also given the opportunity to vote for a wild card in each league, a player of their choice who they believed had performed impressively over the course the season.
The Player of the Month awards, sponsored by Powerade, the Official Sports Drink of The Football League, are designed to recognise the top performances across the month in each level of the Coca-Cola Football League.
The Powerade Awards panel, chaired by Sky Sports pundit and Coca-Cola Ambassador Chris Kamara, selected the nominees. The panel also includes Jack Taylor from The Football League who refereed the 1974 World Cup final, Gerry Cox, Chairman of the Football Writers Association and Malcolm Clarke, Chairman of the Football Supporters Federation.
Kamara said: "Teddy has picked up all the club awards at West Ham this season apart from the Young Player of the Year and that says everything about the form he's been in. He still has so much class and quality and to have scored 20 goals in 33 league games is incredible considering he's 39 years old."
"Curtis seems to be improving every year at Luton. He has great pace, awareness and anticipation and if he continues to work hard there's no doubt he will have a great future in the game."
"Lee's a great entertainer and fans love the tricks he produces in games. But we shouldn't forget that he's a very talented all-round player who has shown over the course of this season what a great finisher he is."
