Matthew Gill has shocked everyone with the goal-scoring exploits that helped him be crowned League 2 Powerade Player of the Month.

Before this season, Exeter midfielder Gill had managed just 10 goals in his previous 11 campaigns.

So when he embarked on a run of four goals from four matches in September, even his best mates were scratching their heads in amazement.

He said: "I've been getting loads of stick from my pals about it. They never believe it when I text them saying I've scored again.

"And when Jeff Stelling announced on Sky Sports that I'd got another goal, some of them assumed I'd scored an own goal!

"We've got Rob Edwards sitting in front of the defence now and that gives myself and Ryan Harley the chance to get forward. So I've had a few nose-bleeds, but I'm really enjoying it."

Exeter have started the campaign with a bang after returning to The Football League after a five-year absence.

The Grecians won promotion to Coca-Cola League 2 after a 1-0 win in the Conference play-off final over Cambridge United.

But it was all a far cry from the previous year.

Paul Tisdale's side lost 2-1 to Morecambe, with Gill sent off in the closing stages after an altercation with Craig Stanley.

Gill explained: "That was a massive low point. We'd done so well to get there so it was bitterly disappointing with how the result went, and how it ended for me.

"To come back straight away and get promoted really put the lid on that episode. I made sure I was not sent off again!

"It was a great achievement for the club and I think we're back where we belong.

"We've had a good start to the season because we've been sticking to what we know.

"We're going to keep doing what we're doing and see where it takes us."
