Peter Thorne reckons scoring goals for Bradford City is easy compared to his favourite hobby - surfing with sharks.

The striker, 35, is flying high at the top of the Coca-Cola League 2 scoring charts after the Bantams' impressive start.

But while fellow professionals like to play golf or just put their feet up in their spare time, Thorne likes nothing better than surfing around the world.

He has been hooked on the sport since he was a teenager.

He once saw a shark pass under his board while on holiday in Mauritius with partner Emma - and has had numerous other close encounters with the fearsome creatures.

Thorne said: "The surfing thing all started when I went on holiday to Newquay when I was younger. I got a tremendous buzz from it and I've been doing it ever since.

"Me and Emma go off whenever we get the time and we've been all over the world. Last summer I was in Perth for three or four weeks.

"Just south of where we were surfing there was a shark attack. I'm not really into messing about with Great Whites. It's their ocean, after all!

"And once a whale shark passed about two feet beneath us when we were in Mauritius."

Thorne helped save someone's life while on a trip to Wales.

He added: "I was driving with my cousin along a coast road in Wales.

"I looked out to sea and saw what I thought was a buoy, but it turned out to be a bloke who had hired a board and gone out alone.

"The tide was carrying him away. I phoned the coastguard and 10 minutes later they rescued him. My phone call may well have saved his life."
