Sheffield Wednesday must beat Coventry City at Hillsborough next Saturday in order to square up the club's hard to explain, diametrically opposed home and away records in what is proving yet again to be a highly unpredictable Coca-Cola Championship.

Before last Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Derby County the Owls had won five, drawn two and lost the other one of their eight home game while losing five, drawing two and winning only one of their eight away fixtures.

That's promotion form at home, with an average points haul of just over two per game - and with a goal difference of plus seven - but relegation form in away games that have yielded (including Saturday) just five points from 27 and with a minus 18 goal difference.

It's no wonder that manager Brian Laws is frantically searching for an answer to a problem that, if it persists, will prevent Wednesday from pushing for a promotion place and may leave them battling to avoid the drop.

Laws was so angry with the inept showing of his team at Derby that he kept the players locked in their dressing room for an hour after the game as he tried to thrash out with them exactly what is going so wrong away from home.

The Manager said: "Psychologically we were not at the races. We seem psychologically a different team away than we are at home. We are resolute at home, conceding only three goals so far, so why do we turn like that when we are away?

"I want to get the situation sorted and we certainly had clear the air talks in the dressing room. I said my bit and they said theirs. We need a reaction next week now - that's the only way you'll know if you've got it right."

As well as looking to sort things out on the pitch, 47 year-old Laws - who took over at Hillsborough just over two years ago - is also set to undertake negotiations on a new managerial contract with Wednesday.

The former Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United boss confirmed: "I'm going in on Monday to talk to them. It's been a tough two years, but Wednesday are a fantastic club and I do see a bright future for them - it's just a matter of time."
