Next season's Coca-Cola Football League fixtures will be announced at 10am on Wednesday morning. It's one of the most exciting days in the football calendar for supporters as they find out how the next nine months of their lives will pan out, but have you ever considered how these decisions are made?

The fixtures computer plays a prominent role however it is not just a case of putting some data into the system and leaving the rest to the software to decide; leagues, associations, clubs, police and local authorities all have their say.

For example, had it ever occurred to you that your team never play a home game on the same day as their local rivals? As the process gets under way, it is in fact possible for a Dagenham & Redbridge fixture to impact on a club as far away as Norwich City, by the time every point of view is accounted for.

Did you realise once the fixtures are officially announced they are still subject to alteration between the clubs? Matches are brought forward or put back 24 hours on occasions and also by television companies as they select the games they would like to broadcast.

If all of this wasn't enough, in the final stages of the process the groundwork is already being put in place for the following season.
