It may be a new year but it's business as usual where live action from The Football League on Sky Sports is concerned, and it's all-go this coming week with a string of matches to be played in front of the television cameras.

It all starts on Friday night as Walsall and Portsmouth go head-to-head at the Banks's Stadium in the first live fixture of 2013.

The Saddlers ended their slide down the division over the festive period by winning three of their four matches. The same can't be said about Portsmouth, though, who now find themselves in the relegation zone after going 12 games without a victory.

The weekend will give you just about enough time to brace yourself for the next haul of games as the Capital One Cup returns with two live semi-final first legs.

Up first, on Tuesday at 7.45pm, it's the turn of Bradford City and Aston Villa. The npower League 2 Bantams have defied all odds by getting to this stage of the competition, beating Wigan Athletic and Arsenal amongst others, but can they take the last step and reach the final of the Capital One Cup?

Paul Lambert's Aston Villa stand in their way and will be hot favourites, even if they are struggling in the Premier League, sitting 16th. The two sides haven't met since 2001, and that was for a top flight fixture which Villa won 3-0. In fact, the last time the Bantams beat Aston Villa was way back in 1971.

The form book and league standings point to Aston Villa, but you can't write the giant-killing Bantams off, particularly in the first leg in front of a noisy Valley Parade crowd.

A day later it's the turn of Chelsea and Swansea City, who lock horns at Stamford Bridge. It's likely to be an even contest with only four places and nine points separating them in the Premier League, but expect an exciting match with plenty of neat, passing football.

Chelsea have the form, winning their last four games, but the Swans have the cup momentum - they haven't needed extra-time or a penalty shoot-out in any of their Capital One Cup matches so far.

If you think that's all the live football action in the coming week, think again, because there's a Johnstone's Paint Trophy Area semi-final on Sky Sports on Thursday at 7.45pm between Coventry City and Preston North End.

The two sides are certainly no strangers to each other as they have been in the same division for the last 12 seasons. In that period they have met 23 times with Preston winning on 12 occasions, compared to the Sky Blues' four victories, while seven have ended level.

Both sides will be hopeful of making the the Area Final, but there's only one place up for grabs - making this an intriguing tie.
