Stuart Pearce's Nottingham Forest were 4-0 winners at Ilkeston on Saturday in front of over 3,000 with all four goals coming in the last 15 minutes of the match.
The Northern Premier League outfit, who drew 0-0 with Derby County in their first pre-season friendly, held their own again Forest until the 76th minute when Simox Cox netted the opener.
Youngster Ben Osborn scored their second four minutes later before Cox got his second in the 82nd minute. Midfielder Osborn then got his brace and the fourth goal of the match in the final minute of normal time.
Port Vale also recorded a comfortable victory against local opposition in their opening friendly, beating Newcastle Town 6-0.
Chris Lines scored first with a free-kick, before further strikes from Colin Daniel, Ben Williamson and Javan Vidal. Vale youngster Ryan Lloyd was also on the scoresheet, scoring two in as many minutes.
Sky Bet League 2 Portsmouth were 4-0 winners at Havant and Waterlooville, and Blackburn Rovers also won by the same scoreline, against Conference Premier new boys AFC Telford.
Another Sky Bet League 2 side, Northampton Town, thumped nine past United Counties League outfit Sileby Rangers with Alex Nicholls, playing his first game after a 20-month lay-off due to a leg break, netting a hat-trick.
It wasn't all plain sailing for League sides against non-league opposition, however. Gary Johnson's Yeovil Town could only muster a 1-1 draw with Basingstoke Town.
Elsewhere, Charlton Athletic, Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley all suffered 2-0 defeats, to Welling, Lincoln City and FC Halifax Town respectively.
There was also a loss for AFC Wimbledon, 3-0 at Margate, who are managed by Terry Brown, the man who guided the Wombles back into The Football League.
Brett Johnson and Luke Moore - two of Brown's players from his Wimbledon days - were on the scoresheet, as well as former Crawley Town player Sam Rents.
Peterborough United tasted a 1-0 victory at Barnet with Kgosi Nthle scoring the only goal of the game and Gillingham beat Folkestone Invicta on Friday night despite going a goal down.
Bury and Stevenage pitted their wits against Premier League opposition, facing West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United respectively.
In a behind-closed-doors match, the Shakers went down 2-0 to the Baggies, while Graham Westley's side registered a credible 2-2 draw with the Hammers after initially going 2-0 in front.
Winger Tom Pett, a new signing from Wealdstone, opened the scoring and a trialist got their second. Matt Jarvis scored an 84th-minute header to half the deficit and Stewart Downing then levelled the score in added time.
Lastly, Leeds United ended their pre-season trip to Italy with a match against, well, Leeds United. They were supposed to be playing Romanian side Viitorul Constanta but, after they failed to turn up, Dave Hockaday's men played an intra-squad friendly, which United won.
