Sheffield Wednesday kept their hopes of automatic promotion alive as they won 2-1 at Brentford in npower League 1.

The Owls led through Keith Treacy's 38th minute free-kick from a tight angle on the right, but Brentford created plenty of chances and eventually pegged the visitors back on the hour mark from the penalty spot.

Mark Beevers hauled down Clayton Donaldson and was perhaps lucky to avoid a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity, but Donaldson stepped up to score the spot-kick.

But just six minutes later, Wednesday were back on top when Miguel Angel Llera got on the end of Treacy's cross to score.

At the other end of the table, there was misery for Exeter City, Chesterfield and Wycombe Wanderers, who all suffered relegation to League 2.

The most drama came at Wycombe, who led three times against Play-Off chasing Notts County, only to concede twice in the final two minutes and lose 4-3.

Chesterfield also led twice before an 80th minute goal from Andrew Williams condemned them to a 3-2 loss at Yeovil Town and the drop. Exeter went down in more straightforward circumstances, losing 4-1 at Carlisle United.

Play-Off bound Milton Keynes Dons enjoyed a 2-1 win over relegated Rochdale, with goals from James O'Shea and Dean Bowditch putting them in control before Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro's late strike.

Huddersfield Town were held 1-1 at Walsall, with Florent Cuvelier cancelling out Lee Novak's second-minute strike for the Terriers. Ryan Noble's 73rd minute header gave Hartlepool United a 2-1 win over Leyton Orient.

Colchester United put on a show in beating Tranmere Rovers 4-2, while Graham Alexander snatched a 90th minute equaliser to rescue a point for Preston North End in a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic. Garry Thompson cancelled out Donal McDermott's goal as Scunthorpe United and Bournemouth drew 1-1, while Bury and Oldham Athletic played out a goalless draw.
