Veteran Tranmere defender Ian Goodison is set for up to eight weeks on the sidelines after discovering he needs a knee operation.
The 39-year-old, who penned a contract extension at Prenton Park in May, has suffered a tear in his cartilage.
Manager Ronnie Moore told BBC Radio Merseyside: "Unfortunately he's going to be out for six to eight weeks.
"He's having the operation on Thursday night and we won't know how long for sure until the surgeon's had a look."
Moore has a selection headache at centre-back with Mark McChrystal laid low due to a calf problem, although Ash Taylor is expected to return to contention for the npower League One opener against Leyton Orient following Wales Under-21 international duty.
