Tranmere Rovers remain the team to beat in npower League 1 after they extended their unbeaten run to 11 matches with a 1-0 success at promotion rivals Notts County.

Rovers' victory came with a slice of fortune - Chris Thompson called from the bench after just 19 minutes due to Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro's injury and scoring the only goal of the game in the 22nd minute. Their record for the season now stands at eight wins and three draws.

Second-placed Stevenage also claimed a narrow victory to remain within four points of the leaders, Greg Tansey scoring the only goal of the game against Scunthorpe United in the 75th minute.

Sheffield United moved into third place with a 1-0 win of their own over hosts Leyton Orient. Nick Blackman was the matchwinner in the 59th minute.

Swindon Town nudged up to fourth with a 1-0 win over rock bottom Bury, Matt Ritchie scoring in the first minute, while Crawley Town dropped down to sixth position after they were beaten 2-1 by Brentford at Griffin Park. Clayton Donaldson scored in each half for the Bees, with Nicky Adams on target for Town.

Fifth-placed Milton Keynes Dons and Portsmouth shared four goals, with Pompey wasting a 2-0 lead after efforts from Izale McLeod and Gbor Gyepes inside 20 minutes. Adam Webster's own-goal brought the hosts back into it and Darren Potter (72) equalised.

Carlisle United moved into the top half of the table with a last-gasp 2-1 win at Walsall. Jamie Paterson (17) put the Saddlers ahead only for Joe Garner to score for the first time in his second stint with the Cumbrians. That looked to have ended the scoring until substitute Liam Noble stole all three points at the death.

Paddy Madden, on loan from Carlisle, marked his Yeovil Town debut with two goals as the Glovers defeated Colchester United 3-1 at Huish Park. James Hayter added to Madden's double and Jabo Ibhere got Colchester's consolation.

Coventry City moved out of the relegation places with their second win of the season, a 1-0 success over Bournemouth courtesy of David McGoldrick's 61st-minute effort. Evan Horwood gave struggling Hartlepool United a ninth-minute lead at Crewe Alexandra but Chuks Aneke (45) and Mark Ellis were on target in a 2-1 turnaround.

A fourth-minute penalty from Billy Paynter was enough to give Doncaster Rovers three points at the expense of Shrewsbury Town. Oldham Athletic saw off Preston North End 3-1, with Akpo Sodje getting a late consolation after efforts from Jose Baxter, Cristian Montano and Dean Furman. Shane Cansdell-Sherriff saw red for North End after two bookable offences.
