Bournemouth went top of the npower League 1 table thanks to a Brett Pitman brace against Crewe Alexandra.

The Cherries took advantage of second-place Doncaster Rovers' goalless draw against Milton Keynes Dons and former league leaders Tranmere Rovers not being in action by defeating Crewe 2-1 at the Alexandra Stadium.

Pitman scored a 59th-minute penalty and then sealed the win six minutes from time following Mathias Pogba's equaliser.

Sheffield United remained firmly in the promotion hunt too, with a 2-0 win at relegation strugglers Bury. Jonathan Forte and Jamie Murphy found the net for the Blades.

Sixth-placed Brentford were 2-0 winners over Stevenage, Tom Adeyemi and Marcello Trotta scoring in either half.

The Bees held off seventh-placed Yeovil Town who also won, 3-1 at home to Preston North End.

Chris Beardsley gave the Lilywhites a 30th-minute lead but a late surge including strikes from James Hayter (73), Nathan Ralph (80) and Paddy Madden (90) saw the Glovers to victory.

Scunthorpe United defeated Carlisle United 3-1 at Glanford Park to move five points clear of the drop zone.

Akpo Sodje started and finished the scoring, with Paul Reid also on target for the Iron and James Berrett grabbing the Cumbrians' consolation on the stroke of half-time.

The division's bottom two shared a goalless draw, with Portsmouth contesting a stalemate at Hartlepool United.
