Hartlepool United have had their relegation to npower League 2 confirmed following Oldham Athletic's 1-0 victory against Yeovil Town at Boundary Park.

Matt Smith's header was enough to secure a win for the Latics, which lifted them eight points above Hartlepool with just two games remaining.

The Pools have been in the battle at the bottom of League 1 all season and manager John Hughes, who replaced Neale Cooper at Victoria Park in November last year, couldn't save them from the drop.

Their relegation means next season they will play in League 2 for the first time since their promotion from the division in 2007.
