Portsmouth have had their relegation to npower League 2 confirmed following Oldham Athletic's 1-0 win against Yeovil Town at Boundary Park.

Matt Smith's goal on the stroke of half-time was enough to secure the win that sees the Latics, the only team that Portsmouth could catch to ensure safety,  go seven points ahead with just six left available from Pompey's last two matches of the season.

Portsmouth, who won the FA Cup as recently as 2008, have lost just once in six but it was a run of 22 games without a win between October and February that ultimately cost them.

Their relegation means next season they will play in the fourth tier of English football for the first time since 1980.
