Scunthorpe United have been relegated to npower League 2
despite a 3-1 win against Swindon Town at Glanford Park.
The Iron were three points adrift of safety coming into the match with the Robins and needed to get three points and hope Colchester United slipped up, but the U's were 2-0 winners over Carlisle United.
An 83rd-minute James Collins strike was cancelled out by goals from Michael Collins, Mark Duffy and Karl Hawley in the final five minutes but it wasn't enough with Colchester also recording a victory.
Brian Laws returned to Scunthorpe as manager in October last year, replacing Alan Knill, but he couldn't save them from dropping into League 2 for the first time since he led them out of the division as runners-up in 2005.
The Iron will now return to the fourth tier of English football, joining already-relegated Hartlepool United, Bury and Portsmouth, just two years after they lost their place in the npower Championship.
