Tranmere have signed defenders Stephen Foster and Evan Horwood.

Both players have put pen to paper on two-year deals with the League One club.

Centre-half Foster, 32, joins after his release by Barnsley where he spent six years, including a spell as captain, and last season helped them avoid relegation from the Championship.

Full-back Horwood, 27, moves to Prenton Park after being released by Hartlepool following their relegation to League Two.

The former Sheffield United and Carlisle defender played more than 125 games during three years at Pools.

Rovers boss Ronnie Moore said: "I'm delighted Stephen has agreed to join us ahead of a host of other clubs who were after his signature.

"He's got plenty of experience and has spent most of his career in the Championship. He's a strong defender who reads the game well, is good in the air and is comfortable on the ball.

"He's a great addition to our squad and hopefully he'll be joined by a few more new faces over the next couple of weeks.

"I'm also delighted to be able to bring Evan to Tranmere. He's an experienced defender who likes to get forward. He created a lot of chances for his team-mates at Hartlepool last season and hopefully he'll do the same for us.

"He's played a lot of games at this level and I'm sure he will be a good addition to our squad."
