Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders has been named the Sky Bet League 1 Player of the Month for December.

Alternating between the wing and the centre, he drove his side forward throughout a stellar December.

Two assists and three goals featured a stunning free-kick against Swindon Town and a terrific 20-yard strike against Milton Keynes Dons.

Brentford manager Mark Warburton said: "It is fantastic for the club. We spoke to the players about working to be the best they can be every day, even when they are out of the team.

"Sam has applied himself well. He had a chance and grabbed it. Sam has done really well. He scored three goals in three games and fully deserves the award.

"It has been a pleasure to watch him play over the Christmas period."

Sky Sports' Football League pundit Don Goodman said: "When a midfielder scores three goals in a month, you know they are at the very peak of their game.

"Sam has been flying and has clearly been the driving force behind Brentford's five-game winning streak."

Sky Bet Head of Football Paul Wiggins said: "Saunders has been in excellent scoring form in December as Brentford have roared to the top of Sky Bet League 1.

"He has managed to score the same number of goals in the month as he did for the entire 2012/13 season.

"Saunders will be looking to hold down a regular place in the team if his scoring form continues."
