Marcello Trotta set Brentford on the road to an eighth successive Sky Bet League 1 victory as they maintained their lead at the top of the table.

Trotta marked his 50th appearance for the club with a 30th-minute opener at home to Port Vale, and Will Grigg made it 2-0 at the death to keep the Bees a point ahead of Leyton Orient.

The men from Brisbane Road are showing few signs of giving up the chase, however, following a 4-0 thumping of Carlisle United.

Scott Cuthbert struck two minutes before the break and Jamie Ness two minutes after it to put the home side in the driving seat, and further goals from Kevin Lisbie and substitute Shaquile Coulthirst wrapped up a comfortable win.

Wolverhampton Wanderers too remain firmly in the hunt for automatic promotion after a 2-0 victory over Preston North End at Molineux.

Dave Edwards' effort gave them a 28th-minute lead and Lee Evans completed just a second win in eight outings 10 minutes after the restart.

Peterborough United's 2-1 defeat at Swindon Town, in which goals from Nile Ranger and Yaser Kasim did the trick for the home side, allowed Rotherham  United to leapfrog them into fifth place.

Nathaniel Knight-Percival scored Posh's consolation but they then had Lee Tomlin sent off.

The Millers trailed 1-0 and 2-1 to Crewe at the New York Stadium, Bradden Inman and Kelvin Mellor scoring either side of Kieron Agard's equaliser.

But Lee Frecklington's second-half double and a goal from Alex Revell secured a 4-2 victory, with Adam Collin saving a penalty from Alex's Harry Davis immediately before Revell put them ahead for the first time.

Seventh-placed Walsall were denied an away victory at lowly Tranmere Rovers when teenage substitute Cole Stockton cancelled out Milan Lalkovic's opener with 12 minutes remaining, but Milton Keynes Dons had to go all the way to the whistle to claim three points against battling Shrewsbury Town.

The lead they took through Dele Alli's fourth-minute opener lasted just four minutes before Ryan Woods levelled, but debutant Chris Long and Dean Bowditch ensured Joe Jacobson's late effort counted for little.

Goals from Sanchez Watt, Clinton Morrison and Freddie Sears put Gillingham to the sword as Colchester United ran out 3-0 winners.

James Wesolowski headed Oldham Athletic to a 1-0 victory over Stevenage, who had Ben Chorley sent off late on, and Notts County boosted their relegation fight as Conor Coady and Enoch Showunmi scored in a 2-1 home win over Sheffield United.

James Hanson's first-minute opener could not end Bradford City's eight-game wait for a victory, with Bristol City's Scott Wagstaff ensuring the spoils were shared.
