The whole world seems to be waxing lyrical about Didier Drogba right now but there is a big, old fashioned powerhouse striker with oodles of class making just as big a mark in League 1 at the moment and that's Norwich City's Grant Holt.
I think there will always be a place for the target man in football. Yes, the game is a lot prettier these days than it was in the past but ask most fans at all levels of the game what they want most and they'll tell you it's a guy who can hold the ball up and get on the end of crosses inside the box to score goals. Luckily for Paul Lambert he has Holt to do that job for him this season, and he's doing it very well with 16 goals in all competitions so far.
I've always rated Grant Holt. His fantastic chip finish last week against Brighton & Hove Albion outlined his talent but it's his throw back style that I think is his most potent weapon. Defenders don't like facing players like Holt, just like Premier League defences find it hard to handle guys like Drogba and Kevin Davies. All-action, hard-man centre forwards will never be a dying breed. Well, I hope not anyway!
Another guy I'm following with a keen interest at the moment is an old mucker of mine, Tranmere Rovers' physio/caretaker manager, Les Parry. He was asked to step in when John Barnes was relieved of his duties a while back but 11 games on he's still in charge of the side, ably assisted by Shaun Garnett I might add.
I used to have a right laugh with Les whenever we came up against Tranmere and I'd always make a point of giving him stick, calling him 'daft and stupid' for wearing those skimpy shorts of his, whatever the weather! If it was snowing he'd still have a t-shirt and shorts on with those milky white legs of his on show. Incredible! He said he'd put tracksuit bottoms on when he got to 500 games and he did but that didn't last long and he's back to his favourite attire now. Maybe he's waiting to clock up 500 games as a manager before he reverts to more sensible clothing again?!
In terms of the job Les is doing, I think he's coping well. He's had up and down results but defensively Tranmere do appear to be improving. It may sound crazy to have a physio in charge but when you've sat on the bench for as many games as Les has, listening to the excellent managers he's worked with over the years you can't fail to learn an awful lot. Les will know all about tactics, motivation and man-management because he's been part of the inner circle for so long.
His biggest problem will be the way he deals with the players as he now has more authority. He'll no longer be able to chat to them the way he once did and they will have to be more careful about what they say to him too. I bet your bottom dollar the treatment room is a lot, lot quieter at the moment!
On the fixture front I can't wait for this weekend's big Yorkshire derby between Leeds United and Huddersfield Town. In the area (and in the context of the division) it is a massive game.
It will be fascinating to see these two sides lock horns as they are both flying right now and it will be nice to see Jordan Rhodes and Jermaine Beckford go head to head on the day too.
Who do I fancy to come out on top? I have to say Leeds because their home form has been amazing this season. It will take a very special performance from Huddersfield to stop them. And then of course, Leeds will be able to concentrate on the task of reaching the FA Cup third round where Manchester United are waiting for them. What an occasion that would be for both sets of fans.
That's all for this week, and thanks for all the messages. It's great to know that people from all over the world are reading my blog…
