Exeter City veteran Marcus Stewart is targeting 250 career goals after agreeing a new one-year contract at St James Park.

Stewart, 36, has ditched retirement plans and intends extending his illustrious 18-year career.

The former Ipswich Town and Sunderland striker, who has 249 goals to his name, says the way Exeter is run played a big part in his decision to stay.

Stewart said: "It would be great to score 250 goals. Not many players reach that milestone in a career.

"But that is not the major factor. When I came to Exeter I wasn't sure what it was going to be like. But by Christmas time I realised how well the club is run.

"The management, players, the people who make the teas - everyone knew what their jobs were and it was a real team effort.

"That changed my views on it all. It gave me a bit of a cause to carry on because things were being done in the way I think they should be done."

Stewart started 38 games and scored seven goals during the Grecians' Coca-Cola League 1 promotion campaign.

He added: "I really enjoyed this season and training has been first class.

"I genuinely think Paul Tisdale is a top person and a top manager and I have enjoyed working with him.

"If it was someone else, I think I would have retired. That is the strongest accolade I can give him."

Since making his debut for Bristol Rovers in 1991, Stewart has scored 79 goals for Rovers, 68 for Huddersfield Town, 37 for Ipswich, 39 for Sunderland, five for Bristol City, 14 for Yeovil Town and seven for Exeter.
