Chesterfield player-coach Mark Crossley says he will finish his 22-year playing career at Saltergate.

The Spireites became Crossley's ninth club when he joined the management team of new boss John Sheridan from Oldham Athletic.

The ex-Wales and Nottingham Forest goalkeeper is no stranger to the League 2 outfit.

Crossley, 40, said: "I played here in 1985 when I was 15 for Hoyland Town Jaguars in the Sheffield Junior League.

"I used to play Saturday morning games alongside Jamie Hewitt and Bob Bloomer. I'll definitely be finishing my playing days here. Starting and finishing here is a feat in itself."

The Barnsley-born keeper was an apprentice at Watford before joining Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest, where he played 392 games in 13 years.

Crossley will combine coaching duties with playing at Saltergate.

He added: "I'll be player-coach as well as providing competition for number one keeper Tommy Lee.

"I've done my coaching badges and I start my pro licence this month. I'm available for selection though. You can't beat the competition."
