A week after securing promotion, Swindon Town emphatically claimed the npower League 2 title with a 5-0 victory over Port Vale.

Matt Ritchie set the Robins on their way seven minutes before half-time and four strikes in the second period rounded off a special afternoon at the County Ground. Paul Benson grabbed a brace and one each for Aden Flint and substitute Alan Connell completed the rout.

The win came seven days after they were promoted to npower League 1 despite losing 3-1 at Gillingham.

The Robins went into the match with the Gills knowing just a point would seal an immediate return to League 1, after they were relegated last term. Whilst things didn't go to plan at Priestfield results elsewhere meant their place back in the third tier of English football was confirmed, despite the defeat.

Paolo Di Canio has transformed the Wiltshire-based club after taking over in the summer and the victory over the Valiants has given the Italian his first piece of silverware as a manager.
